Jazz and Poetry
Saturday, August 22, 2026  5 -6:30 PM

Our first spoken word concert features the poetry of Ray Romine, who coined the word Terradise to describe the 18 acres he and Trella (Hemmerly) Haldeman Romine purchased in 1952,

Ray was known as the Postman Poet, having delivered mail in Marion. He got many of his ideas for poems during the route, and  the poems will be accompanied by jazz guitarist Summers Hagerman of Cincinnati.

Small Rivers

Where flow small rivers in their quest for sea,
Across the pebbles, and around a stone,
Between the chiseled banks where winter’s end
Sees droves of white dentaria April-blown;
Where great white oaks and sycamores unbend
Above the water turning into foam;
Along this water-path a soul might mend–
Here let me settle; let me call it Home.

Ray Romine, June 8, 1953
